June 2, 2024 Second Sunday after Pentecost

Bishop Solak visited St. Michael’s today. There is no printed version of her sermon.

The Gospel : Mark 2:23-3:6

The message she shared was, “Compassion is the Governing principle of the heart of God.”

One of God’s gifts to us is the gift of the Sabbath. It allows us to experience rest, renewal and healing.

God rested on the 7th day and made it one of the Ten Commandments.

In the Gospel lesson for this morning, Jesus tells the disciples that the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, will come to them. “And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness because I am going to the Father and you will see me no longer; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.”

In his first letter John wrote, “Whoever does not love, does not know God.” This is the same John who always seemed to be with Jesus wherever he went. John had come to this conclusion by spending time in the presence of God in Christ. “Whoever does not love, does not know God.” The outcome of spending so much time in the presence of God was that it made one grow in the ability to love. This is the unique form of Christian love known as ‘agape’.
