Introducing the St. Michael’s Wish List

There have been numerous occasions when people have wanted to support St. Michael’s by giving a gift in memory of someone or in celebration of a special event. A few months ago a member of the Vestry suggested we develop a “Wish List” for such gifts. These are things that are not in our normal operating budget, but which would be helpful for us to have. So, the next time we have such an offer from someone, we will be able to provide this list of options!
If any of you can think of anything else we need, or if you would like to make such a gift, or if you have any questions about why we could use something on this list, please contact Marjorie.

1) Donations to establish a “Choral Scholar” fund

We would like to establish a fund for paid choral scholars from local colleges and universities. Thesestudents would be music majors or sacred music majors. St. Vincent’s and Seton Hill have such students. We need a section leader in each voice—soprano, alto, tenor, and bass. In addition to singing, they would teach and encourage the other members of their section.

2) Reupholster the window bench and chairs in the main hallway of the Smith House The upholstery is faded and frayed. We have not gotten any estimates to do this yet.

3) 100 “Lift Every Voice and Sing” (Supplemental Episcopal hymnal) $2500*
This hymnal includes many Gospel and spiritual songs not in our hymnal, such as The Battle Hymn of the Republic; Blessed Assurance; Great is Thy Faithfulness; How Great Thou Art; It is Well with My Soul; Just a Closer Walk with Thee; Lift Every Voice and Sing; My Faith Looks Up to Thee; Nearer My God to Thee; Precious Lord, Take My Hand; The Old Rugged Cross; and When Peace Like a River. These are ‘old timey’ hymns that many former Protestants miss, and with which many younger people are unfamiliar. However, their sing ability and popularity have withstood the test of time.

4) 100 “Wonder, Love and Praise” (Supplemental Episcopal hymnal) $1540*
This hymnal includes many of our most popular praise hymns, such as On Eagle’s Wings; God be with you till we meet again; Here I am, Lord; I am the bread of life; Lead me, guide me, along the way; People lookEast; Taste and See; Ubi Caritas; Wade in the Water; We are marching in the light of God; and Will you come and follow me.

5) Patio furniture for Punch-on-the-Porch (2 Chippendale benches and a coffee table) $1800)

*A quick note about the hymnals. These are our official supplemental hymnals. We would still keep the Red Celebrate Hymnals.
