March 28, 2024 Maundy Thursday

This is the night Jesus gave us the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. The bread and the wine mysteriously do become his precious broken body and poured out blood. These are now signs of his suffering love for us. These are now the means by which we are strengthened in this world to continue to love despite our problems, and trials, and sufferings, and failures. God’s grace is literally given and poured into us. This is the way to that life on the other side of suffering.

What happened with the Transfiguration of Jesus was so spectacular it would be easy to over look three little words. “Listen to Him!” God told the witnesses to listen to Jesus, not Moses or Elijah. Those of us here listen to Jesus. How could we encourage others do the same?

February 4, 2024 Fifth Sunday of Epiphany

Though the terms ‘cure’ and ‘heal’ are often used interchangeably, they really have different meanings. “Cure” is defined as a ‘recovery or relief from a disease”, while to “heal” is ‘to make sound or whole.’ We might be cured of some physical or mental ailment, but remain unhealed in the larger sense. The soul remains sick. Jesus is most concerned with the healing of souls damaged by evil and sin. I don’t think he’s so concerned about your cholesterol.

It’s probably safe to assume that most preachers are not preaching this lesson today, and for good reason. It’s likely to make many of us uncomfortable. However, it seems to be about more than the body. It seems to me to be more about the disposition of the soul within the body.
