Confirmation, Reception and Reaffirmation
The Bishop of Pittsburgh, the Rt. Rev. Ketlen Solak, made her annual visit to St. Michael’s on Sunday, June 29th. One of the bishop’s key duties is to confirm, receive, and reaffirm baptisms in her diocese, and on Sunday,
Bishop Solak did all three! Members of our Faith Seeking Understanding class had been preparing for months for this moment through learning, prayer, and discussion.
Confirmation is for those who have been baptized to receive the laying on of hands from a bishop to publicly recognize and strengthen their faith.
Reception is for those who have been baptized and confirmed by a bishop in another Christian tradition, to fully welcome them into the Episcopal Church.
Reaffirmation of baptism is a chance for Episcopalians who have grown in their faith and knowledge of God to publicly recommit to their baptismal vows.
If you are new to St. Michael’s, think God may be calling you to any of these rites, or would simply like to learn more about the faith, our Faith Seeking Understanding class will begin again in October.
All are welcome!
Holy Hikes Southwest Pennsylvania Schedule for 2025
St. Michael’s of the Valley, Ligonier and St. Francis in the Fields, Somerset have partnered to launch an official chapter of Holy Hikes in the Diocese, known as Holy Hikes of Southwest Pennsylvania. We piloted a series of hikes in 2024, as a way to test how the ministry would go and to understand how congregations might collaborate. After a successful initial season, we are ready to launch the ministry diocesan-wide.
The hiking season runs from May to October, although our official launch is delayed until June this year, and the hikes take place in the morning on the third Saturday of each month. We will start the hikes at 10 a.m., but some of the team will be there about 15 minutes early to welcome hikers. (If the weather is forecast to be hot, we may move the start time to 9:00 a.m. Please look for announcements on Facebook from the diocese.
Read more about it and get the full schedule HERE.
Can’t Be With Us in Person?
The 10:30 service is now streamed Live on Facebook for those times when you must be elsewhere. You can also find services on our YouTube Channel.
Time to Think About “The Annual TNA Backpack Project!”
For more than twenty years St. Michael’s has been filling backpacks for the students of The Neighborhood Academy. This year St. Michael’s is partnering with three urban churches who will help fill the backpacks.
The TNA Backpack Project begins in early July.
St. Michael’s will be responsible to fill 70 backpacks for students grades 6 – 12.
There are several ways that you can participate in this project. If you are able, please consider filling more than one backpack. The Outreach Commission will fill a bag for you, if you are unable to shop. The cost is $40.00.
The drop-off box for the supplies will be in the front hall of Smith House.
Look for the list of the supplies needed to fill the backpacks in future church bulletins.
The young people at The Neighborhood Academy look forward to receiving their backpacks and this is an awesome ministry that we provide to encourage these students to have a successful school year.

Kids Sunday School Summer Update!
We are excited to continue Children’s Sunday school throughout the summer months every other Sunday with the hopes of going to every Sunday in the fall. It has been great to learn Bible stories together, work on art projects, and "make a joyful noise to the Lord" (Psalm 100:1) by singing!
The scheduled dates are July 13th, July 27th, August 10 & August 24th. All classes are at 9:15 am. Parents are always welcome to sit in or can attend the adult Sunday school, which meets at the same time.
If you have kids, grandkids, or friends with kids that you've always wanted to invite to church, this is the perfect opportunity! All are welcome! And if you are interested in volunteering to be present in the classroom as an extra adult, please call the church.
For more information, please refer to this page and contact the church at 724-238-9411 to sign up.
Please spread the word, and we hope to see you there!
Adult Sunday School Summer Topic
The Adult Sunday School will be taking up a discussion of the book, “A Lawyer’s Case for the Resurrection”, by Jim Jacob, Esq., a former atheist.
Sunday at 9:15 in the parish hall during Adult Sunday School
The book addresses the most common objections to belief in Jesus ’Resurrection. Jacob does this based on evidence and logic, also considering the motives of early believers and those opposed to belief. It might be a good, quick summer read for everyone,
